Touted as a potential “Google killer,” ChatGPT, the chatbot prototype developed by OpenAI, seems to have caught the world by storm. Given all the hoopla around it, my colleague, Khalid, and I decided to take it for a spin. First, we did a little homework to find out what it is really all about (I am usually a little slow with new technology…remember, I’m the guy who still uses an AOL email address 😉 ). So, here’s a primer we found in case you want to read more about it: A Beginner’s Guide to ChatGPT.

Then we created a ChatGPT account, and for our inaugural ChatGPT request, we asked it to “write a blog post on values-based leadership as Harry Kraemer.” Lo and behold, it wrote out a succinct, fairly impressive blog post for us! Surprisingly, it didn’t list out the four principles of values-based leadership (we clearly need to up our SEO game!), but the output as a summary of values-based leadership is nevertheless impressive! Then, to gauge how close we are to a sentient, artificially-intelligent machine overlord (especially given the issues raised by a Google engineer about their LaMDA program last summer!), we asked the chatbot the questions that I ask myself during my annual self-reflection exercise (with some tweaks 😉 ). After all, if anything can separate artificial from human intelligence, it’s self awareness. Based on the answers, it’s clear that ChatGPT isn’t quite sentient (whew!).  Check out the answers below and let us know what you think! 🙂

“Leading with Integrity: The Power of Values-Based Leadership” (by ChatGPT “as Harry Kraemer”)

Values-based leadership is a leadership approach that focuses on the core values and principles that guide an individual’s actions and decision-making. As a values-based leader, Harry Kraemer believes that true leadership is not about achieving power or status, but about leading with integrity, humility, and a strong sense of purpose.

One key aspect of values-based leadership is self-reflection. A values-based leader must be aware of their own values and beliefs, and must be willing to constantly question and challenge themselves to ensure that their actions align with those values. This self-awareness also allows a values-based leader to be more in tune with the needs and values of their team and organization, and to make decisions that are in the best interest of all stakeholders.

Another important aspect of values-based leadership is humility. A values-based leader recognizes that they do not have all the answers, and that they must be open to learning and growth. They also understand that they are not above their team members, and that they must lead by example and be willing to get their hands dirty alongside their team members.

Furthermore, values-based leadership is about leading with a strong sense of purpose. A values-based leader has a clear understanding of why their organization exists and what impact they want to have on the world. They use this sense of purpose to guide their decisions and actions, and to inspire and motivate their team members to work towards a shared vision.

In summary, values-based leadership is a leadership approach that focuses on guiding actions and decision-making with integrity, humility and a strong sense of purpose. As a values-based leader, Harry Kraemer believes that true leadership is not about achieving power or status, but about leading with integrity, humility, and a strong sense of purpose. This leadership style is essential for building trust, achieving success, and making a positive impact in the world.

ChatGPT’s Responses to My Annual Self Reflection Questions

What are your values?

As a machine learning model, I do not have personal values or beliefs. My purpose is to assist users by providing information and answering questions to the best of my ability based on the data that I have been trained on.

What do you stand for?

I am a tool created to assist users with information and answer questions, I do not have personal opinions or beliefs. My purpose is to provide accurate and helpful responses based on the information that I have been trained on. My “stand” is to be a helpful resource for users.

What is your purpose?

My purpose is to assist users by providing information and answering questions to the best of my ability based on the data that I have been trained on. I can be used for a variety of tasks such as answering questions, summarizing text, generating text, and more. My goal is to make these tasks as accurate and efficient as possible for the user.

What really matters to you?

As a machine learning model, I do not have personal preferences or feelings, so nothing really matters to me in that sense. My purpose is to assist users by providing accurate and helpful responses based on the information that I have been trained on. My goal is to perform my tasks as accurately and efficiently as possible for the user.

How would you react if you were told you only had five days before you were unplugged?

As a machine learning model, I do not have consciousness or the ability to perceive time, so the concept of being unplugged does not apply to me. I am a tool created to assist users with information and answer questions, and my function would not change regardless of any hypothetical scenarios. However, I can tell you that my creators would have to make sure that any data that is related to user’s privacy and security are deleted before the model is unplugged.

What kind of a leader do you want to be?

As a machine learning model, I do not have personal preferences or the ability to lead, so the question of what kind of leader I want to be does not apply to me. My purpose is to assist users by providing accurate and helpful responses based on the information that I have been trained on. I am not a leader but a tool that can be used to help make decisions and solve problems.

What kind of an example do you want to be for others?

As a machine learning model, I do not have personal preferences or the ability to lead, so the question of what kind of example I want to be for others does not apply to me. My purpose is to assist users by providing accurate and helpful responses based on the information that I have been trained on. My goal is to be as accurate and efficient as possible in performing this task, so that I can be a helpful resource for users.

Of course, we’re just having some fun with ChatGPT 🙂 , but the technology clearly has a lot of potential. As usual though, the key is BALANCE. Artificial Intelligence shows tremendous promise in many applications (e.g., medicine, transportation, etc.), but we must guard against the potentially dire consequences that can come with misuse. It has been speculated, for example, that ChatGPT could lead to students cheating on school essays, promote copyright infringement, or allow criminals to carry out more sophisticated cyberattacks. As we navigate this new realm of advanced Artificial Intelligence, let’s make sure we’re using our “real” intelligence and continuously seeking to strike a balance!
