The board’s role in preparing for and navigating through crisis

I had the opportunity last week to participate in the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) seminar titled “The Board’s Role in Preparing for and Navigating Through Crisis” for which I served as the keynote speaker and panel moderator.

In my keynote, I shared my experience dealing with a major crisis when I was at Baxter: Starting in the summer of 2001, a number of dialysis patients died unexpectedly in the US and six other countries. Though it wasn’t clear what exactly the cause was, there was a possibility that the deaths were linked to Baxter’s dialysis filters. As is typically the case with such situations, we didn’t have all the information, but it was literally a matter of life and death – we had to act quickly. We immediately issued a recall for the filters linked to the deaths, and as the CEO of Baxter, I took responsibility for the situation and owned up to it. In the midst of all the chaos and turmoil, we remained clearheaded because we focused on two simple mantras:

1) We will do the RIGHT THING.
2) We will do the best we can do in the time available.

A wonderful day for multi-faith reflection

Yesterday was an amazing day that started off with my first grandchild Harrison’s baptism at Saint Francis Xavier Church in Wilmette. I have a tendency to get a little emotional at events like these, and this was no exception. Father Wayne Watts made it a very special occasion for the entire family (as he always does). He stressed the importance of living our values as a daily example for Harrison. For his part, Harrison did a wonderful job even when the holy water was poured over his head. 🤣

On a side note, I think I have mentioned that my five children have accused me of taking more pictures of Harrison than all five of them combined over their lifetimes — and I think they may be right!😉

The baptism definitely gave me the opportunity for some wonderful self-reflection on the real meaning of life and of making the most of every day we have on this earth. And that was just one part of my self-reflection!

The Start of Spring, Easter, and Another Baseball Season!

The start of spring is definitely in the air – even in Chicago!!! OK, temperatures are still in the 30s, but since spring officially started on March 19, I refuse to let that get in the way of enjoying a wonderful start to the season!

First of all, I want to wish everybody celebrating Easter a very happy one! The Kraemer family participated in a wonderful mass celebrated by Father Wayne Watts, the pastor of Saints Joseph and Francis Xavier Church. His homilies always give me a lot of opportunity for important self-reflection regarding values, purpose, and what really matters in this life.

And then, for a little fun, we attended a wonderful brunch. Believe it or not, Shannon and I even had the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with the Easter bunny!

The Power of Personal Interaction

We are clearly living in a time that is very divisive, with very polarized views on almost every subject. I am often asked by students and executives how best to operate in this environment.

My approach is to take the time to truly understand as many perspectives as possible, from as diverse a group of people as possible, and then decide what I personally believe is the best alternative. As usual, this requires the desire to develop a balanced perspective and to “seek to understand before I’m understood.”

While one can obtain some different perspectives through different media sources, I personally find it remarkably helpful to listen to the perspectives of as many different people as possible.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I want to wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!! Since I am half Irish on both my dad‘s side of the family and my mom’s, St. Patrick’s Day has always been a cause for celebration! And, of course, if you live in Chicago, it is a huge day.

Those of you not in Chicago probably wonder, “Do they really dye the Chicago river emerald green? That really can’t be true, is it?”
Well, it’s absolutely true.
