Most of us are in such a hurry in our daily lives that it becomes difficult to separate activity and productivity. Yes, we are very active, but how productive are we?

In my first Kellogg “Values Based Leadership” class every quarter we discuss the importance of self reflection and taking the time to determine what life is really all about:

  • What are your values?
  • What is your purpose?
  • What really matters?

In order to encourage the students to really reflect on these questions, I tell the story of my Grandfather Grehan teaching me how to think about material possessions by asking me a question: “Harry, have you ever seen a hearse with a coffin going to a cemetery with a U-Haul trailer in tow? Many people must think they will either live forever or that they can bring all of their material possessions with them when they die.”

When I told the story this week one of my students sent me the following message that night:

“Harry, your grandfather’s quote greatly resonated with me. One of my favorite sermons is from Pastor John Ortberg called “It All Goes Back in the Box.” I am not sure if you are familiar, but it is an expanded message related to your grandfather’s saying so I wanted to pass it along to you. I think you might enjoy it if you get the chance to listen.”

It is a 40-minute audio recording that I sent to the entire class and am now sending to all of you.

However, before you listen to it, I want to let you know it does include a religious message, and therefore it is ENTIRELY optional.  Nonetheless, I think you may find the message inspiring regardless of your personal beliefs.

One more topic: For those of you who celebrate Easter, I hope you had a wonderful holiday! As you can see below, “Pop Pop” (my grandfather name) and Harrison had a fantastic time searching for Easter eggs together (and yes, I really tried hard not to eat all of his chocolate…but it wasn’t easy).
