Values-Driven Leadership: A Conversation with Harry Kraemer/ AWS Executive Insights

My entire focus as a Kellogg Clinical Professor is to teach current and future business leaders the importance of values-based leader. Why? because I strongly believe the world desperately needs more VALUES-BASED LEADERS!

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Richard Taylor from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to discuss my leadership journey; how I used my personal values to guide business decisions, overcome challenges and find success in different roles.

I am very pleased to share this episode of the podcast, Executive Insights – A Leader’s Edge, with you. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed my 20 minute discussion with Richard.

The Power of Volunteering–Finding More Purpose in Your Life

From the students in my MBA classes at Kellogg to the professionals I meet when giving talks to organizations around the globe, people are just as ambitious as they’ve ever been. As satisfying as their career paths may be, however, many of them are looking for something more–a deeper sense of purpose or more opportunities to pursue their passions. For many of these people, that “something more” comes from volunteering, giving of themselves in support of organizations and causes that align with their values.

I recently wrote about the power of volunteering in Harvard Business Review. Special thanks to my former student, Nick LoManto, who in addition to having a wonderful career at Vanguard, is a volunteer firefighter. The photo he shared is of his two young sons who were able to see their dad in action at a vehicle rescue training. As Nick told me, “They might actually think Dad is cool for once!”

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Looking for a Sense of Purpose? Volunteer.

At age 29, Nick LoManto led a busy life. He was moving up in his job as a manager of investment analysts at the financial services firm, Vanguard. At home, he and his wife were settling into their marriage and starting to think about growing their family. “There I was, a finance professional with every gift a person could wish for,” he told me. But despite all he was building, LoManto couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.

How Relatability Promotes Mental Health For Your Team

I am in Shanghai, China this week to give leadership presentations and discuss my new book, “Your Values-Based Legacy.” I will then travel to Hong Kong to teach my “Leading a Global Company” class to the Kellogg HKUST executive MBA class 27 at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and meet with several Kellogg alumni groups. I will provide a summary of the trip next week.

My Forbes magazine contributor article for this week is “How Relatability Promotes Mental Health For Your Team.” I’ve included a link to it in this week’s blog post, and the entire article is below.

How Relatability Promotes Mental Health For Your Team
As values-based leaders know, we cannot lead others unless we can first lead ourselves. This thinking applies to far more than just individual and organizational performance. There is also a corollary between taking better care of ourselves and contributing to the health and wellbeing of our team members.

In my previous column I discussed how leaders can significantly reduce their worry, fear, anxiety, pressure, and stress by setting two goals: to do the right thing and to do the best they can. Now, through self-reflection and greater self-awareness, leaders can model how to adopt a healthier mindset, as well as offer meaningful support to their teams.

A Fun Birthday Celebration & Another Forbes Article

I hope everyone had a great weekend!! Two topics for this week’s post:

First, I truly enjoy writing a biweekly article for Forbes magazine. This week’s article focuses on what a leader should do to minimize worry, fear, anxiety, pressure and stress. Here’s a link to the article, and the full article is below.

Second, my five children decided to host a birthday party for me despite my desire to avoid it. One reason it was confusing was the party signs read “70th party” even though I tried to explain it was only my 40th birthday. However, I admit it was hard to explain how I could be only 40 years old if my oldest daughter is 37 years old😳😁

Nevertheless, it was quite a weekend. My friend Mike set up a pig roast in the afternoon, and my daughter-in-law, Katelyn, baked an unbelievable cake!!

Followed by a celebration in downtown Chicago featuring the Gentlemen of Leisure Band!! A good time was had by all!! The night involved a lot of dancing until midnight!!!

Wishing Everyone ‘Happy Holidays!’

First of all, I want to wish all of you celebrating Christmas or Hanukkah a wonderful holiday season.

It was fantastic that Julie and I were able to get together with our entire family, including our first grandchild, Harrison.

If that wasn’t busy enough, we then drove up to Minnesota to get together with more than 30 of our Kraemer and Jansen relatives and had a surprise guest at one of the family parties!!

You guessed it, nobody knows exactly who it was, but somebody pretending to be Santa Claus showed up at the house. I will leave it up to all of you to guess who it could possibly be. Here are a few pictures that may provide some clues.

One of the Greatest Things in Life

I am currently in Bangkok, Thailand to give several leadership presentations. I will summarize the trip next week, but I thought today I would see if you could guess what I am thinking when I ask, “What is one of the greatest things in life?”

You probably have a few good guesses such as: Being blessed with great parents, finding your life partner, or becoming a parent. Alternatively, maybe it’s realizing the importance of your religious beliefs, being a member of the winning sports team, or contributing your time, talent and treasure to an important charity or nonprofit.

These are all wonderful guesses, and are all very important. However, as I sat on the 16-hour flight to Bangkok this weekend, I found myself reflecting on one particular blessing above all.

Give up?!?!
